Surprise party for Ted

- Anne Freestone

Ted Gray received a lovely surprise last Saturday evening.

He thought he was going to his sister Anne’s home for a barbecue to celebrate his 70th birthday, and ended up at the School of Arts Hall.

He had already received one surprise when Jan’s sister Cathie and her husband Bill Levy turned up on the doorstep from Albion Park, but still didn’t catch on to what was happening.

He did forgive Jan when he enjoyed a great evening with the family and friends who were waiting in the hall to help him celebrate this special occasion.

His daughter Melanie, her husband Shannon and their children Haydn, Alyssa and her boyfriend Justice, Ted’s sister Anne and brother-in-law John, and Ted’s youngest brother Jack were also in attendance.

The lovely meal beautifully prepared and served by Kate Murray and the girls, and the official part of the evening and cake cutting, was followed by dancing to finish off the celebrations.

Finley Golf Club is currently promoting a ‘Get into Golf’ program for women which the club has been fortunate enough to be able to run in October, with the help and support of Golf NSW.

The program is a one hour lesson for six weeks, commencing Sunday, October 9 at 10am.

This is a beginner course that aims to teach women the basic skills of golf in a fun and relaxed environment.

Normally this course costs each participant $99.

But with the backing of Golf NSW, the club is able to offer it for free to the first ten women who enrol.

For more information and to register, go to nswgolf.org.au/womens-golf.

Finley Show Society held a very successful street stall last Friday, and would like to thank all who assisted in any way and the community for its continuing support.

Raffle winners were as follows: Fire pit donated by Pether Ag – Renee Grimwood; gift box donated by Bowerbird Gift Co. – Sarah Pascoe; trailer of wood – Scot Isedale.

With just two and a half weeks to show day, it is time to pick up a copy of the show schedule from the SRN, post office or newsagency, or check the online version on the show’s website.

Be sure to check the closing dates as the sections do vary.

The show office will be open from Tuesday, August 30, 10am to 4pm.

Finley CanAssist president Pat Radford and treasurer Mark Keran were delighted to receive a cheque for $1000 recently from Finley MenShed, at the hands of Gavin Butcher and Bill Rowlands.

Finley CanAssist gives personal and financial support to those in our local communities on their journey with cancer.

Pat expressed sincere thanks to the members of Finley MenShed and assured them that the contribution would help enormously.

Patrick Kelly from Finley Little Athletics was also present to receive a generous donation from Finley MenShed.

Patrick went on to advise that the financial assistance was very much appreciated and of great benefit to the younger members of our community.

The organisation is only just getting active again following the COVID-19 restrictions over the past two years.

The club meets at the Finley Recreation Reserve on Fridays at 5.30pm and will recommence this Friday.

Plans are well under way to celebrate the organisation’s 50th anniversary on October 30.

New members are most welcome and are encouraged to take advantage of a two week trial period before deciding on joining the club.

Just a reminder that the annual Pink Day Out is being held at the Finley Golf Club today. It is once again being organised by Joanne Dean, and sponsored by Finley Bakery and Patisserie.

The sponsors have generously donated some of their prize winning lamingtons.

Everyone is invited to go along to the club whether playing golf or not, to enjoy coffee and cake and take part in the raffle with numerous prizes.

All funds raised are used for researching for a cure for breast cancer.

The Finley Lions Club’s wood raffle season is drawing to a close in the not-too-distant future.

Don’t let the opportunity pass to win a great trailer load of wood to keep the home fires burning.

Darren ‘Scooter’ McDonald was the lucky winner (again!) last Saturday.

Darren is a great supporter of the Lions Club fundraising.
