Jordan in national championships

- Marianne Whelan

Jordan Swann, accompanied by his family, travelled to Adelaide recently to play for New South Wales in the under-12s National AFL Championships.

He was one of the 23 players selected from the NSW state carnival held in Coffs Harbour in May, and was the only Year 5 boy in the NSW team.

The boys initially met up at the SCG for their team photo on the hallowed turf.

They then watched the Sydney Swans train before being presented with their playing jumpers by their idols in red and white.

The NSW Blue Pups, as the under-12s team is fondly known, approached each game with their trademarks of 'pressure', 'resilience' and 'teamwork' and played some very handy football.

Unfortunately New South Wales were beaten in four of their five games, but were able to get the closest margin they have ever had with Victoria and Western Australia.

One of Jordan's highlights was kicking a goal in the third quarter against Queensland.

This trip was so much more than just the five games of footy.

Jordan has learnt so much from the coaches and other players, and made some fantastic new mates.

Jordan loved the opportunity to represent his state at this level and would like to thank his local coach Craig Thornton and his Riverina coaches for all their support and guidance to get him to the national carnival.

The Berrigan Football and Netball Club put on a great final on Sunday, and congratulations to the seconds and fourths football sides for winning their elimination final.

They will now have a week off and play the weekend of August 27 and 28.

The netballers scheduled to play were not so lucky but certainly put up a mighty fight, making the opposition earn their win.

The under-15 netballers, who finished second on the ladder, will play this Sunday against Katunga at Blighty. All the best to the under-15s.
