School ends 19-year drought

-

The playgrounds and classrooms of Berrigan Public school are still raging with excitement after the school won the Finley Zone Athletics Handicap Shield for the first time since 2003.

The handicap shield is decided by how many points a school can accumulate throughout the carnival, divided by the number of competing students.

This gives an even playing field to all schools no matter their size.

Competing against other schools in the local area, the whole BPS student body put in an immense and extremely commendable effort to be awarded the shield.

Teacher Emma Phillips, who attended the carnival held at the Finley Football Ground on August 12, had nothing but positive remarks towards the students and their efforts.

“We had been running a special athletics program all term, and the kids had been working hard to get everyone ready. It really paid off,” she said.

“It was a whole school effort, not just the kids that won races.”

Phillips said the 24 students who

did compete did an amazing job representing the school.

“The students were very excited — completely over the moon, they couldn’t believe it.

“The school had not won an athletics shield since 2003, so it was massive.”

BPS student Jack Phillips also won the age champion medal for his age

group.

BPS now has seven students moving on to compete at the Riverina Athletics Carnival in Albury this Friday.

“They have been continuing their training at school to keep them fit and primed ready to fly the flag for Berrigan at the Riverina Carnival,” Phillips said.
