Book Week was celebrated in style at Tocumwal Public School last week, with art activities throughout the week culminating in a book character costume parade.

Principal Darren White said Book Week is a time for celebrating a love of reading.

“We held a book stall two weeks ago with a huge number of books being purchased,” he said.

“A percentage of the money will be used to purchase new books for the school library.

“During this week, students participated in a number of Zart Art activities which were related to some of this year’s shortlisted books and the theme ‘Dreaming with eyes open’.

Activities included making a majestic butterfly in flight using straws and paper, based on the book Coco and the Butterfly by Laura Bunting and unique expressive line drawings and an ‘identity’ painted clay bowl inspired by Blue Flower by Sonya Hartnett.

On Friday, students came to school dressed as their favourite characters and paraded and danced proudly on stage.

“There were many fantastic costumes including Maleficent, Willy Wonka, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and a plethora of Harry Potter and Star Wars characters,” Mr White said.
