Brolga Place revitalisation
The entirety of Murrumbidgee Council’s Stronger Country Communities Fund Round 5 funding will be spent on a community and business development in Coleambally.
Council has assigned its $870,605 to the Brolga Place Revitalisation Project - a hub for shopping and community gatherings in Coleambally.
The decision to spend the funding on one project stems from a previous council direction to complete projects already committed to before advancing new ones.
Plans for the redevelopment were originally put to council in July.
The proposal is to redevelop the important community hub, and council has worked hard with the Chamber of Commerce, businesses and community groups to come up with a concept.
Tenders to design and construct the Brolga Place redevelopment are currently open.
Council general manager John Scarce said funding was originally allocated to the project following the formation of Murrumbidgee Council - through the mergers of Murrumbidgee and Jerilderie Shires in 2016.
He said the rising cost of materials, especially steel, and the cost of groundworks meant more funding was needed.
Brolga Place is part of the Coleambally main shopping precinct.
Council plans to remove the verandahs located along the front of the businesses.
Mr Scarce said following that stage, the installation of a large aeroplane shaped set of wings will be added to provide shade.
“This project has gone back and forth a few times in the past five or six years,” he said.
Council’s SCC Round 5 funding is just part of the $1,266,334 in total allocated to the local government area.
The balance is open to eligible community organisations.
Project applications for this round close on September 23.
