A toast to Queens of the Green at Toc

- Tocumwal

Barefoot Bowling has started again, with a fantastic number of people becoming involved.

It is held on a Monday night, followed by dinner in the clubhouse.

Either make up your own team, or call the tournament director - our own Barefoot Bowling Bobby - on 0418 313 918.

It’s a great way to spend a Monday night, perhaps learn a new sport, meet new friends and, importantly, have fun.

Tocumwal Golf & Bowls Club recently held the inaugural Queens of the Green two-day tournament.

It was a roaring success, partly due to the glorious weather.

We had players visiting from Melbourne, Bendigo and Ganmain, so the word had spread far and wide.

The winners were a team from Numurkah Golf Bowls Club, who left smiling after winning a hefty slice of $3,000 (and the captain’s very special tiara).

Well done ladies, you all played extremely well.

Everyone who joined us certainly want to join us again next year, so it promises to be even bigger and better.

Keep your eyes open for our flyer, and don’t miss out.

Mark October 9 in your diary and make sure to come down to the club to support Chris Philpot in his ‘Can Do’ challenge to support Can Assist.

As a cancer survivor himself, his challenge is to play lawn bowls non-stop for 12 hours.

He has asked 12 dedicated supporters if they will give one hour each of their valuable time to play against him in his endeavour to raise awareness of this fabulous volunteer organisation, and to also raise much needed funding for their excellent ongoing work in assisting those with cancer.

We’d love to see as many bowlers as possible support Chris, by coming down to the greens on the day, starting 8am.

Collections will be taken on the day.

Berrigan

A welcome break in the rain saw Berrigan Community Bowls Club host their first club event for the season - the Open 100-up handicap.

Perfect greens and brilliant sunshine welcomed the bowlers on the day and, as is always the case in the early season, there were a few upsets in the early rounds.

Jack Buckman and Ken Mynard both showed promising signs in their first club event and will be great pick-ups for the club.

The highlight of the day was the round one clash between Steve Gann and Paul Glanvill.

It came down to the last end, with Gann managing to hold onto the shot to win.

Kelly Milich also performed very well defeating Garry Seamer in a nail-biter.

Round one matches: P McVicar - bye, G Parr def K Goldsmith 101-92, S Gann def P Glanvill 103-99, R Bradbury - bye, G Clements - bye, N Burke def J Milich 104-81, K Milich def G

Round two: G Parr def P McVicar 106-89, R Bradbury def S Gann 100-67, N Burke def G Clements 104-81, K Milich def K Mynard 10265, M Hansen def C Harvey 102-59, W Daly def R Glanvill 104-103, M Curtin def B Bashford 105-65, G McKay def H Rennick 102-93.

The quarter-finals will be played next week: G Parr v R Bradbury, N Burke v K Milich, M Hansen v W Daly, M Curtin v G McKay.

Berrigan will host its first Men's Trade Day tomorrow, weather permitting.

The club expects both greens to be filled for what will be an enjoyable day.

Unfortunately, wet weather saw the Curlews' first practice match against Club Mulwala cancelled.

A final practice match against Barooga has been scheduled for Saturday, October 8, with the pennant season to start the week following.

Rick Bradbury, Garry Seamer, Matt Hansen and Jason Milich will represent the Curlews in the Murray Bowls State Fours to be played at Numurkah Golf.

A late substitute, Seamer has big shoes to fill. He is stepping in for Goulburn Murray champion Paul Glanvill.
