Olivia scores junior championship
Olivia Thompson has taken out the Tocumwal Golf & Bowls Club 2022 Junior Golf Championship with her first score under 100 points.
She had two outstanding rounds and scored 84 stableford points to walk away with the trophy.
The 13-year-old from Tocumwal has been playing golf with a handicap for about four years, but playing socially for about 10 years and practicing with her father John at the diving range.
Her younger brother Harry, 11, is also a keen golfer.
Olivia looks up to Australian professional golfer and winner of the 2019 Women's PGA Championship Hannah Green, but also has an interest in badminton, which she plays Friday nights, and basketball, so Michael
Jordan is another professional sportsperson she admires.
Last year, Olivia won the Ladies C Grade Nett at Tocumwal and in 2020 was a member of the mixed foursomes champion team, also at Tocumwal.
In 2020, Olivia was part of the Goulburn Murray team for the Victorian Pennant Championships, which were held remotely on her own course due to COVID-19 restrictions.
According to her father, Olivia has no specific golf goals, as she has “come back a bit from where she wanted to go”.
“Her aim is to get out on the course, have fun and keep reducing her handicap,” Mr Thompson said.
"She'll have a go at pretty much any sport and is quite artistic; she does drawing, painting and sculpting.“
Olivia said she was pretty happy with the way she played, especially since it was the first time she broke 100.
Mr Thompson said Olivia plays the game in the right way and doesn’t take it too seriously.
“It was good to see her play well under pressure in the final rounds,” he said.
