Quartet bound for Big Apple
The concrete jungle is calling four young Rockingham dancers, who have been invited to attend classes at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School in New York.
Annaleise Gaffney, 17, Mikayla Compton, 15, Alana Mossman, 13, and Kiara White, 12, auditioned for Joffrey Ballet School artistic director Robert Ray last July after he made a rare trip to Perth.
The girls will now embark on a one-week trip to the United States, departing on September 25, accompanied by their dance teacher Beverley Margaret.
The aim of the trip is for the dancers to visit the school and discover if they have what it takes to live and study in New York.
Annaleise and Mikayla have been offered four-year placements while Alana and Kiara have been invited to attend summer school.
The girls study at the Beverley Margaret School of Dance in Rockingham and have been dancing for many years.
As a result of their invitations to the Joffrey Ballet School, the dancers have enjoyed a visit to the Perth Consulate General for the United States Cynthia Griffin, who has been following their progress.
Mrs Margaret said students from her company had previously received invitations to dance and perform overseas but this particular occasion was a rare opportunity.
“The invitation from the Joffrey Ballet School is very exciting — I have had students receive offers from around the world and travelled to Los Angeles and Flor- ida before, but this is my first time in New York,” she said.
Annaleise and Mikayla train four days a week and hope to become professional dancers after their high school studies.
Mikayla Compton, Annaleise Gaffney, Alana Mossman and Kiara White are preparing to travel to New York as part of an invitation to study at the Joffrey Ballet School.
