Funding for sporty seniors
They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but the Hope Valley Badminton Club in Kwinana are being given a chance to try.
The City of Kwinana has been selected as one of four WA councils to undergo a pilot program called Silversport, which is a State Government initiative to encourage seniors to participate in sport.
The initiative helps cover the costs associated with sports club memberships or program fees, with $200 per person available for those over 60 to claim.
In Kwinana, eligible residents can apply to receive funding towards a range of physical activities, including swimming, bowls, group fitness classes, walking groups, gym memberships, yoga or Pilates.
Department of Sport and Recreation director general Ron Alexander was on hand to unveil the initiative in Kwinana last week and stressed its importance.
“It gets people involved in their community and it’s not just the physical side, but also helping people to make new friends,” he said.
“Sometimes people just don’t have that discretionary amount of money to keep active, so it is what we should be doing — helping people who need it.”
Mr Alexander confirmed that Silversport was a $300,000 initiative, with $240,000 contributed through the Department of Sport and Recreation and $60,000 contributed by the various local governments.
The scheme will run until June 2017, where a decision over whether to roll it out Statewide will be made.
City of Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said senior residents were lucky to have a great selection of recreational clubs and fitness activities available in Kwinana.
“This is a fantastic incentive for older residents to get back into a physical activity they have not participated in for a while, or even try something completely new,” she said.
SilverSport applications will be available at Kwinana Recquatic from July 1.
