Junior trio bound for China
Peel District Cycling Club members Conor Leahy, Dharlia Haines and Tyler Lindorff have been selected for the long team to represent Australia at the World Junior Track Championships in Shenyang, China, in August.
Another young Peel member performing well is Matthew Connan, who last weekend won the under-15 men’s time trial, road race and over all title in the National Junior Mountain Climb Championships in Victoria.
While Peel District Cycling Club did run a race last Sunday, there was a lot to keep members busy, with the regular social rides, the 3 and 5 Dams rides, the State 160km Time Trial Championships in Pinjarra and the West Coast Masters criterium at Smeaton Way in Rockingham.
There were a few new faces in A-grade, including Holden Racing’s Erin Kinnealy and a couple of riders stepping up from B-grade.
They were in for a baptism of fire, with the racing aggressive from the start.
The regulars knew who to watch and who to chase. On the seventh lap the race just exploded, the bunch split and all the newcomers ended up in the second group.
A few riders got put into difficultly, but the group was all together with three laps to go, then Tom Ford attacked, got a break and Eddy Hollands raced across to join Ford. The bunch hesitated and that was all that Ford and Hollands needed.
In the sprint, Hollands took the win narrowly from Ford.
In the bunch sprint, Martin Albrecht was the victor, with Matheos Venetis second and Darin Dunstan third.
Peel District Cycling Club races at Smeaton Way next Sunday.
