Diabetes-risk check reminder

Southern Telegraph - - Telegraph News - Gareth McKnight

Adults in the Rockingham and Kwinana region are being urged to have a type 2 diabetes risk check as part of a national awareness program.

National Diabetes Week is this week, with latest statistics showing only 5 per cent of Australians over 40 have been checked for the debilitating disease in the past two years.

Both Rockingham and Kwinana have poor health profiles, with the suburbs having some of the worst collective diabetes statistics in WA.

Diabetes Australia chief executive Professor Greg Johnson said many people had type 2 diabetes for up to seven years before being diagnosed.

“The tragedy is that much of the damage to the body that causes diabetes-related complications like vision loss, kidney damage, heart attack, stroke and limb amputation is preventable,” he said.
