Bike thief fined, disqualified
A man who stole a motorbike and led police on a short chase through Wellard has received a suspended prison term.
Samuel Holt appeared in Rockingham Magistrate’s Court last Friday charged with failing to stop in circumstance of aggravation, driving with forged plates, having no authority to drive and stealing a motor vehicle.
The court heard Holt was riding a Honda motorcycle that had been reported stolen five days earlier when police tried to pull him over at 3.35am on Friday, October 20.
The prosecution said Holt sped away from police and was pursued for about 100m, driving over a roundabout on the corner of Shaftesbury Way and Labeth Circuit before he pulled over.
Appearing via videolink from Hakea Prison, Holt pleaded guilty to all charges and said he was remorseful for his actions and wanted to get back to work.
He told the court he also wanted to care for his terminally ill mother and be with his 18-month-old daughter.
Magistrate Vivian Edwards noted Holt had been in Hakea since October 21 and sentenced him to seven months jail, suspended for 12 months.
He received an $800 fine and was disqualified from holding a licence for three years.
