Aus­tralia Day crowds have a blast

Throngs of peo­ple turned out at the Rock­ing­ham fore­shore for the City of Rock­ing­ham's Aus­tralia Day fire­works display last Friday. Find out more about all the fes­tiv­i­ties in Rock­ing­ham and Kwinana.

Fam­i­lies from far and wide gath­ered in the cities of Rock­ing­ham and Kwinana for of­fi­cial cit­i­zen­ship cel­e­bra­tions on Aus­tralia Day last Friday, with more than 100 peo­ple be­com­ing new Aus­tralians.

In ad­di­tion to cit­i­zen­ship cer­e­monies, Rock­ing­ham and Kwinana ac­knowl­edged some of the com­mu­nity’s finest con­trib­u­tors with the Com­mu­nity Ci­ti­zen of the Year Awards.

Cel­e­bra­tions in Rock­ing­ham saw Pa­tri­cia Pow­ell and Eileen Giles jointly awarded com­mu­nity ci­ti­zen of the year, in recog­ni­tion of their work in the com­mu­nity, which in­cludes help­ing the dis­ad­van­taged through the SOUL Soup Pa­trol and for their work with the Vil­lage Women Pro­gram.

Ai­dan Black­shaw, a 15-year-old Warn­bro Com­mu­nity High School Ed­u­ca­tion Sup­port Cen­tre stu­dent, won the com­mu­nity ci­ti­zen of the year — youth award for his ef­forts in help­ing the home­less with care pack­ages.

Peter Philipps was the com­mu­nity ci­ti­zen of the year — senior award-win­ner.

He was recog­nised for or­gan­is­ing the Rock­ing­ham Ro­tary Mar­ket for 10 years.

More than $1.25 mil­lion raised from the mar­ket has gone back into the com­mu­nity.

The ac­tive cit­i­zen­ship — group or event award went to the Baldivis Lions Club for the Baldivis Com­mu­nity Mar­ket, which saw more than $32,000 go back into the com­mu­nity last year.

Cel­e­bra­tions in Kwinana took place at Ad­ven­ture Park and in­cluded a break­fast, fol­lowed by cit­i­zen­ship cer­e­monies and the Com­mu­nity Ci­ti­zen of the Year Awards.

Abram Ziege­laar was named the Kwinana ci­ti­zen of the year.

He has been a res­i­dent of Kwinana for 50 years, and dur­ing his early days was a vol­un­teer at the lo­cal scout group and a range of sport­ing groups. Along with his wife, Mr Ziege­laar has been a longterm mem­ber of the Kwinana St Vin­cent de Paul branch and at the age of 83, he is still serv­ing as the branch’s pres­i­dent.

The win­ner of the Kwinana ci­ti­zen of the year — senior award was Max Bird, who has been a mem­ber of the lo­cal Ro­tary club for 19 years.

He has been pres­i­dent twice and has com­mit­ted his time to many com­mu­nity projects.

Mr Bird is the spear­head of the Ro­tary Ti­mor project, which de­liv­ers clean drink­ing wa­ter to re­mote vil­lages.

So far, he has raised $200,000 for the project and in­stalled wells in four re­mote vil­lages.

Ebony Pavlov was named the win­ner of the Kwinana ci­ti­zen of

the year — youth award and was recog­nised for her com­mit­ment to young peo­ple in Kwinana.

She is a vol­un­teer at a range of or­gan­i­sa­tions in­clud­ing Unit­ing Care West, Emer­gency Ser­vices Cadets, Kwinana Tee Ball and the City’s LyriK pro­gram.

Ebony has also been an ac­tive mem­ber of the Kwinana Youth Ad­vi­sory Coun­cil for many years and is study­ing com­mu­nity ser­vices and ed­u­ca­tion sup­port so she can con­tinue to help oth­ers in the fu­ture.

Delia, Miguel, 11, and Roseann Macaraeg, 15, of Wel­lard, be­came Aus­tralian ci­ti­zens at the City of Kwinana’s cit­i­zen­ship cer­e­mony.

Ac­tive Cit­i­zen­ship — group or event win­ners Simon Heales and Amanda Cor­nell rep­re­sent­ing the Lions Club of Baldivis for the Baldivis Com­mu­nity Mar­ket with Baldivis MLA Reece Whitby.
