Trio hope to roar at champs in Lion City
Three young athletes from Kwinana are set to represent WA on the world stage at the 2018 International Athletics Championships in Singapore in July.
Wellard’s Tiana Laing, 13, Bertram’s Bailey Artemis, 14, and Leda’s Maddison Gray, 14, will jet off to the event looking to fly the Australian flag high. The trio, who all qualified for the event after impressive performances at State championships earlier this year, will get the opportunity to test their mettle against athletes from across Asia.
Bailey and Maddison will be competing in the 1500m walk while Tiana will be taking part in 400m, 800m and 1500m events.
All three athletes said their focus for the event was to improve on their personal bests, with Tiana in particular keen to break a longstanding time in the 800m.
“I haven’t hit my 800m personal best for a while and that’s what my biggest aim is for Singapore,” she said.
Locally, in summer, Maddison and Bailey compete at Baldivis Little Athletics Centre and Tiana races at Cockburn Little Athletics.
