Flames secure play-off spot

The Rock­ing­ham Flames will fea­ture in the men’s and women’s SBL play-offs af­ter the men se­cured eighth spot with an 89-78 win over Lake­side Light­ning at Mike Bar­nett Sports Com­plex on Fri­day night.

The club split their four games over the week­end, with the women falling to their Lake­side coun­ter­parts on Fri­day night, but win­ning against Joon­dalup on Satur­day as the men went down.

On Fri­day, top-of-the-ta­ble Lake­side im­proved to a 20-1 record on the sea­son with a 12th straight win, 87-76 over the Flames women. The Light­ning bolted to a 14-point quar­ter-time lead be­fore ex­tend­ing the mar­gin to 23 points in the sec­ond quar­ter.

D’Le­sha Lloyd did what she could to get the Flames a win, fin­ish­ing with 32 points, seven re­bounds and three steals, while Taneisha Har­ri­son added 22 points and seven re­bounds, and Mad­di­son Allen seven points, 14 re­bounds, four as­sists and three blocks.

The Flames men wel­comed new re­cruit Sun­day Dech to the fold on Fri­day, where the Light­ning pro­duced a 28-19 open­ing quar­ter be­fore the Flames caught fire in the sec­ond to lead 48-44 at the half.

The game was still on the line head­ing into the final pe­riod, but the Flames pro­duced when it mat­tered to secure the 89-78 win and a spot in the post-sea­son ac­tion.

Dech made an im­pact on de­but with 24 points and nine re­bounds. Cur­tis Wash­ing­ton added 17 points and five re­bounds and Kevin White dropped 11 points and five as­sists.

On Satur­day night the Flames women with­stood an im­pres­sive third-quar­ter fight­back by Joon­dalup to claim an 87-75 win, with im­ports Har­ri­son (25 points, five re­bounds, four as­sists) and Lloyd (24 points, five boards, two as­sists) com­ing up big. Allen added 11 points, 11 re­bounds, four blocks and two steals.

The Wolves men wel­comed for­mer Wolf­pack cham­pi­onship win­ner and MVP Greg Hire back to Joon­dalup for the first time since he joined Rock­ing­ham in 2018, but it was not a happy re­turn for the Wild­cats vice-cap­tain.

The Flames started strongly against the sec­ond-placed Wolves to lead 31-26 at quar­ter-time, but the Wolves took con­trol in the sec­ond half to claim a 102-89 win.

Dech had 22 points and six re­bounds, Hire had 20 points, 15 re­bounds and seven as­sists, and White added 13 points, three as­sists and three steals.

The Flames play their last home and away fix­ture on Fri­day against Cock­burn at Mike Bar­nett Sports Com­plex from 6.30pm.
