Rams fall short of grand final trifecta
Rockingham Rams fell a little more than two kicks away from making it a full set of grand finalists after the league side went down to Pinjarra by 14 points in their preliminary final at Waroona on Saturday.
With the colts having booked their grand final ticket last weekend and the reserves moving into the showpiece match earlier in the day, the Rams wrestled with the Tigers in the league game to be the only club with all three of its teams represented on the final day of the season.
A horror first quarter for the Rams virtually snuffed out any chance of a win, registering just a point to Pinjarra’s 3.2 (20).
Things improved on the scoreboard in the second term for the Rams, kicking three goals and a behind but the Tigers added a further four goals and three behinds to go into half-time with a 27-point lead.
Any chance of a second-half fightback was snuffed out in the third quarter as inaccurate kicking cost the Rams, who registered just one goal and four behinds and Pinjarra added three goals and a behind to take a six-goal lead into the final quarter.
Wayward kicking again cost the Rams despite Pinjarra being restricted to just a point. Three goals reduced the margin but five behinds killed off any chance of a comeback win.
Luke Dowling led the way for the Rams with three goals, Mitchell Anderson added two and Zayne Selkirk and Timothy Taylor nabbed a goal each, while former Essendon forward Leroy Jetta kicked four for the Tigers.
Rockingham’s reserves survived a scoreless final quarter to hold on for a five-point win over Pinjarra to book a showdown with South Mandurah in Saturday’s grand final. The Rams held a 35-point half-time lead but only added three behinds in the second half as the Tigers added five goals. Timothy Dowe was the only multiple goal scorer for the Rams, with Riley Allison, Brandon Smith, Lucas Humphries and Jake Vittorangeli all registering majors. Clifford Brough and Ryan Budd each kicked two for the Tigers.
The Rams colts face Pinjarra at 9.05am on Saturday at Rushton Park, with the reserves to face the Falcons at 11.45am. Pinjarra and Centrals face off in the league grand final at 4.15pm.
