Three-time Rockingham Flames Women’s State Basketball League MVP Sami Whitcomb has made her debut for Australia at the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Spain.

It marks the latest chapter in a whirlwind couple of weeks for the former Perth Lynx captain, who recently helped Seattle Storm win a third WNBA championship.

Whitcomb originally missed selection for the tournament in Spain after being selected in a training camp, but an injury to fellow naturalised Australian Leilani Mitchell provided her an opportunity to finally pull on the green and gold after gaining citizenship in February.

Whitcomb made her debut on Saturday in the Opals’ 86-68 opening group B pool match win over Nigeria, scoring eight points in a little more than 22 minutes action, and followed up on Sunday night with 16 points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal in 20 minutes’ court time in an 84-43 win over Argentina.

Australia’s final group match was against Turkey on Tuesday.
