Car­cass sparks whale warn­ing

A shark warn­ing was is­sued last week af­ter a whale car­cass was re­ported off Gar­den Is­land on Thurs­day.

The 5m short fin pi­lot whale car­cass had been beached on the north of the is­land, near Her­ring Bay.

The whale was re­ported to au­thor­i­ties by a mem­ber of the pub­lic about 12.30pm. Of­fi­cers from the Depart­ment of Bio­di­ver­sity, Con­ser­va­tion and At­trac­tions re­moved the whale car­cass on Fri­day.

How­ever, wa­ter users have been ad­vised to re­main cau­tious in this area be­cause of the po­ten­tial residues that may con­tinue to at­tract sharks.
