Bumper field of juniors put on a show
Rockingham Triathlon Club completed its 2018 Triathlon Program with the running of its second race of the series last Sunday, the Step Ahead Podiatry Triathlon.
The family- orientated club has in place a competition for its junior athletes who get to apply their skills over three disciplines.
The club’s junior sports director Bree Trewin was overwhelmed with a record number of juniors that showed up for the Trystars event at Rockingham Beach.
Braxton Ware, Saxon Baldwin and Christian Watson had the bike course well under control, as did Rex Bowron, Juan Nel and Jack Martin in the boys’ 7- 9 age group.
Mack Hill, Jaco Nel with Alexander and Cameron Wallace in the 1011 year category had a great day, all finishing within seconds of each other, while in the girls 12 - 15 years long- course race Ashley Stewart, Skye Bowron, Jasmine Hussev, Chloe Fleav and Amity Tsagaris delighted their families in a close and exciting finish.
The seniors’ long course distances covered a 300m swim, 15km bike and 3km run and for many this was completed in less than 50 minutes.
The competition was lively in the women’s division, with Michelle Manning continuing her good form from the recent Busselton Ironman event, with Jennifer Maccarone and Caroline Clark taking out the minor placings.
In the women’s short course, Sophie Burton nudged ahead of Vanessa Baker with Kelly Gray third.
The heat was on in the men’s long course, with 54 participants in action and making a big splash over the 300m swim. Ronan Hays led the way ahead of Grant Sexton and Brett Johnson.
Once on the bike, positions changed within the first lap. The Stay Classy crew members moved up the leaderboard with Ben Trewben leading the way chasing Greg Manning, with Matt Ware, Jamie Lauritsen and Michael Gormally slipping through the field.
Stephen Atherton was in the action, hitting speeds of 45km/ h.
On the final leg, positions changed ever so slightly at the top with Johnson eventually taking control at the front of the chasing pack to cruise over the line ahead of Manning with Trewben third.
The men’s short course was yet another tight affair with Michael Backshall consolidating his position with a strong bike leg finishing ahead of Julian Stewart and Michael Taylor third, with good performances from Ollie Martin and Mason Le Roux.
The program picks up again for Rockingham Triathlon Club on Sunday, January 20, at Alexandra carpark on Rockingham Beach Road.
