Thief faces seven charges

A Cooloongup woman previously described as a “prolific offender” by a police prosecutor has been handed a year- long community- based order after stealing nearly $ 3000 worth of items from local businesses.

Cindy Lee Danby appeared in Rockingham Magistrate’s Court last Friday and pleaded guilty to seven charges of stealing.

The court was again told of the facts of each stealing charge, which included the woman stealing $ 700 worth of sunglasses, $ 170 worth of bath towels and a beach bag, two cooking sets worth $ 700 and a $ 299 FitBit. She also stole $ 199 worth of items from an auto repair shop and a $ 40 face cream.

Her lawyer said it was “accepted” that Danby had a “significant history” and pointed to her “limited income” as an explanation.

However, Magistrate Leanne Atkins challenged the defence and said Danby’s income did not excuse her stealing.

Danby was placed on a 12- month community- based order and instructed to pay back the value of the items stolen to each business, as well as $ 107.50 in court costs.
