Minister confirms roundabout start date

Stanthorpe Border Post - - NEWS -

THE State Government has confirmed what many already knew, that work will commence on a roundabout south of Stanthorpe imminently.

Works to build the $5.4 million roundabout at the southern intersection of New England Highway and Wallangarra Rd will soon be under way, according to Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey.

Mr Bailey said motorists travelling through Stanthorpe would be better off thanks to the project.

“Safety is the Palaszczuk Government’s number one priority, and we were concerned after seeing the crash data from this location,” Mr Bailey said.

“We have been working closely with the community to find a solution which improves safety for all motorists.

“As a result of those discussions, we committed $5.4 million under our Targeted Road Safety program to design and build a new roundabout,” Mr Bailey said.

“The roundabout will make this intersection safer for motorists entering and exiting the highway, delivering a safer New England Highway for the Granite Belt community.”

Mr Bailey said preliminary works were expected to begin within the next week in preparation for full construction activity from July onwards.

“Preliminary works include road widening, clearing, and drainage works,” Mr Bailey said.

“Some changed road conditions will be in place while works are taking place.

“We urge motorists to observe all signs and drive with caution around the work site.”

Mr Baileysaid an average of 10 jobs would be supported over the life of the project.
