GRANITE BELT TO HOLLYWOOD

Horror film shot locally premieres

WHEN most people think of the Granite Belt they would not expect a chill to run down their spine unless that person had seen the short horror film Slaughter at

Lonesome Rock, shot throughout the region in July last year.

The film premiered at horror film festival Screamfest in Hollywood in October last year and had a private cast and crew screening last Sunday.

The film follows the story of a country policewoman who investigates two abandoned cars in the dead of night and is drawn into wilderness to discover the missing occupants in horribly mutilated states.

Film co-producer Caitlin Johnston said having a location which felt isolated was important to the film.

“That was definitely part of the feel and also plot device,” Ms Johnston said. “There wasn’t a lot of people around so she couldn’t radio for help, there wasn’t people driving past because it’s isolated.

“It has that feel to it, that the landscape is almost a character and it’s almost a bit alienating.”

Ms Johnston said the Granite Belt community was great to work with.

“The community were really supportive, we’d definitely go back,” she said.

“The council was really supportive as well, helping us find locations and getting us in contact with the right people.

“It really underscores how much the community got behind it, it was really fantastic.”

The film will screen as a part of the Gold Coast Film Festival tomorrow, however Ms Johnston hopes to bring the film somewhere closer to Stanthorpe.

“We’d love to potentially look at screening somewhere like a regional festival,” she said.

“We’re making inquiries but we’d love to have something a bit more local to show everyone down there.

“But it’s a bit of a work in progress at this point in time.”

Ms Johnston is working on a number of other projects, but increasing the length of

was on the cards.

“There’s definitely been talk about seeing if we want to expand the concept of the short film into something that’s a bit longer,” she said.

“It’s purely conversation at this point in time.

“(Returning to Stanthorpe) is definitely something we’d consider because the community got behind us and because of that unusual looking landscape.”
