Warwick want ‘rid’ of south

Stanthorpe Border Post - - NEWS -

WARWICK residents have begun talking up the prospect of de-amalgamation, with some seeing Stanthorpe as a waste of their ratepayer dollars.

According to Southern Downs Resident Action Group secretary Andrew Gale, the split would unlikely have a heavy impact on Warwick.

“The power base has always seemed to be in Warwick,” Mr Gale said.

“When we had the amalgamation of Rosenthal, Killarney and so on

Warwick still remained the power base.

“That’s traditionally what happens, smaller centres get gobbled up by the larger centres.”

He said a number of people have expressed they would prefer not be associated with Stanthorpe.

“I’ve asked some prominent business people how do we fix the problems in Warwick and immediately they say ‘get rid of Stanthorpe’.”

Mr Gale said he strongly believed any costs associated with de-amalgamation should be barred by the State Government.
