An inspiration to many
I WAS fortunate to read this wonderful article about Angelo Puglisi and wanted to share my own journey of my career as a result of this great man’s inspiration.
At 16 years of age, my father and mother knew that tourism was in my sights and were always looking for ways to encourage all four of us Deveney kids into areas of interest and progression.
My parents (Greg and Yvonne Deveney) always held great admiration of Angelo’s enthusiasm for life, family, wine and Stanthorpe tourism. Angelo and his lovely wife Mary were always there to support any new festival, ongoing charity while running their own business and raising a young family.
My parents encouraged me to do work experience and I was the luckiest girl in the world to be mentored by Angelo at Wine Week at the Crest Hotel in Brisbane for three years consecutively while I went on to study tourism at Gatton College.
I was able to work alongside of Angelo for five full days, learning about Stanthorpe wines, meeting other winemakers and (learning) how to promote the destination as part of the wine experience.
It was at that moment my wonderful career in tourism began and I knew this industry was for me.
I will be forever grateful for the mentoring and the support Angelo and his family have afforded me over the past 40 years. I feel incredibly privileged to have had that first start with Angelo and to see first-hand what success looked like.
I have been blessed with my career but I have never forgotten the great man who believed in me and made a difference to my choices.
Angelo is the face of success as a family member, a friend, a mentor, a community leader, a winemaker. While he may be being staged as a famous face of Queensland, he is a wonderful face to remind me of why I chose tourism as my life too.
Thank you Angelo and congratulations on your wonderful recognition. We are all lucky to have your influence in our lives.
