Tenth time’s a charm

FOOTBALL: Stanthorpe United has claimed their tenth A-grade title in stellar fashion, downing the might of Ballandean in a classic battle.

The two met in last season’s grand final and it was United again, who’d triumph after 90 minutes.

United went into the tie having only lost a solitary game all season, to their grand final foes back in August.

With that game at the back of their minds, the young side were never going to take their opponents lightly. The game started at a frenetic pace, both sides trying to assert some dominance and build momentum.

The cut-up pitch made it difficult for either side to play any sort of fast, passing football.

Following several raids on Ballandean’s goal, United would eventually take the lead when a cross-come-shot from United midfielder Matthew Purcell found its way to the back of the net.

One-up and United soon found their rhythm.

It wasn’t long before the Redbacks went two-up after a Hunter Murphy cross found the head of competition top-scorer Curtis Allen.

Ballandean went to the break deflated but not defeated. Ace McDonald and Aiden Halford shone for the reds as they tried to get one back.

As the game wound down, United dug their heels in and sat deep defending any attack thrown at them.

Ballandean threw more and more at their opponents but luck wasn’t with them as United would hold on to claim the win and their tenth A-grade title in 12 years.

United youngster Hunter Murphy was awarded the match ball, named man of the match after an excellent display in the middle of the park.

TITLE SUCCESS: Stanthorpe United made it 10 A-grade title wins after their victory over Ballandean in the grand final on Saturday.
