Stanthorpe awards cut
Reducing categories to only two
AUSTRALIA Day in Stanthorpe is about to change. The number of Australia Day awards for 2019 has been reduced to two – Southern Downs Citizen of the Year Award and the Southern Downs Youth Citizen of the Year Award.
A Southern Downs Regional Council spokesman said feedback from local community groups, like Lions and Rotary, and a decline in the number of nominations received in recent years, indicated that the Australia Day Awards would be best delivered as community-run events with council providing support where needed.
“SDRC understands that several Lions and Rotary groups around the Southern Downs are planning to host their own awards and acknowledge outstanding members of the community.
“SDRC will still run citizenship ceremonies in Warwick and Stanthorpe on January 26 for those residents becoming new Australian citizens.”
However Stanthorpe Rotary president Kim Thorburn said they were yet to receive communication from council about hosting the awards.
“Normally Rotary runs a barbecue at the Australia Day ceremony at Weeroona Park, that was planned and is always planned,” he said.
“In regards to (hosting awards) I’ve heard nothing from council about that.”
Stanthorpe Lions club secretary Mark McCosker said they also have not been approached by council.
“We do the Christmas carols and Rotary does Australia Day, that’s what’s been done in the past.”
Neither club have plans to hand out awards.
In 2018 Stanthorpe had awards for Australia Day Citizen, Junior Citizen, Cultural, Junior Cultural, Sport, Junior Sport and Sport Administrator.
Council will run other festivities next year such as the triathlon and activities in Weeroona Park.
Nominations for the Southern Downs Citizen of the Year and the Southern Downs Youth Citizen of the year close 5pm Friday, November 30. Visit sdrc.qld.gov.au/ArticleDocuments/674/Australia%20Day%202019_Nomination%20Form.pdf.aspx
AWARDS CUT: This year there were eight award recipients, but next year there could be just two people standing in this spot.
