A produce delight as Alf returns
Market to open Saturday
A LOCAL boy is bringing fresh produce to the masses with a new market venture set to get under way this Saturday morning.
Alf Turrisi, the owner of Aratula and Warwick Farmer’s Market’s, always dreamed of opening up in Stanthorpe and that desire is set to be realised.
“I’m a Stanthorpe boy, originally from here, and I’ve always wanted to get something up and going but it has been a progression in the pipeline,” Mr Turrisi said.
“So Stanthorpe opens this Saturday and the concept is we do fruit and veg like normal but we very much want to see ourselves as a bit of a boutique market.”
They’ll incorporate some “niche” products such as honey, ginger, yoghurt's and cakes as well.
“People can come down on a Saturday and buy their fruit and veg and maybe buy a little gift as well,” he said.
He’s eager to promote and help local businesses and says he’s open to taking on more local products.
“My background is commercial farming so I've got a very good understanding of how product should be handled,” Mr Turrisi said.
“What we see perhaps in the chain stores as a premium fruit and you’re paying exorbitant prices on, you can get the same freshness, quality, nutrition but something that might have a mark on it, at a much cheaper price.
“It’s only specifications that make it in to chain store grade. We buy probably 90 per cent of product off the farm.
“There’s ‘x’ amount of tomato growers and ‘x’ amount of different growers... you can only really deal with one. We’re not big enough to take them all on.
“We’re always interested in other stuff as long as we can make it work for both sides.”
They’ll open and run every Saturday, starting December 1, from 6am to noon.
“We want to stress we are a market, we’re not a fully fledged retail shop,” he said.
“I’ve got a very good team behind me, I’m very fortunate my partner does a mountain of work and she’s very supportive and both my parents also help in the business.
“Not only is the family in there but we have a very good nucleus behind us now.”
DREAM COME TRUE: Alf Turrisi is proud to be opening a new boutique market in his local patch.
