Support is in the bag

Stirling Times - - Mid-Year Adjustment -

LOCAL supermarkets are doing their bit to ensure shoppers are prepared when the plastic bag ban takes effect on Sunday.

The Downs IGA manager Gurpreet Singh said his Wembley Downs store had “posters everywhere” to remind people of the change.

He believed most shoppers were aware and many already brought their own reusable bags.

“People have started this already,” he said.

But the store plans to ease shoppers into the ban and will provide more than 20,000 free bags to those who forget theirs during the first week.

This will only apply to customers who spend more than $30.

Though Mr Singh said some people were critical of the ban, they had no choice but to get on board.

“They have to adapt,” he said.

“I think it’s a very good initiative.”
