Nipper finds gold in the water

AN 11-year-old nipper has been riding the wave of success with her recent win at the Surf Life Saving WA’s annual Nipper and Youth awards.

Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club’s Isabella Neervoort was named the 2021 Surf Sports champion, which is presented to the highest performing nipper at the recent championships.

Isabella was awarded three individual gold medals, the most among other nipper athletes, at the 2021 SunSmart WA Nipper Surf Life Saving championships.

The Nedlands resident won medals for the 1km run, board race and Ironwoman categories in the Under 12 age group.

“It’s a pretty big achievement for me and I’m pretty proud of what I’ve been able to do,” she said.

Isabella said her ultimate goal was to keep enjoying what she did and be a member of a surf club for most of her life.

“I started in Under 7s at North Cottesloe and my two older siblings had also gone into it before me,” she said.

“It was kind of like a family thing to go down every Sunday morning and go do nippers.”

Isabella will start patrolling Trigg Beach next week in preparation for national competition the Aussies at Scarborough Beach in March next year.
