> PAUL MOUHAYET’S BIG AND LITTLE BROTHER MUSTANGS TAKE TURNS SMASHING RECORDS

- MARK ARBLASTER

PAUL Mouhayet and the Moits Racing team have been taking names and kicking blower-car butt for the past few years, both in Australia with their orange 10.5 Outlaw Mustang and in the US with another ’Stang. In August last year the latter black, big-tyre car ran a 5.59-second pass at 274.33mph at the Street Car Super Nationals in St Louis, setting a world speed record for doorslammers. Troy Coughlin took back that record by a bee’s dick at Las Vegas in November last year, with his twin-turbo C7 Corvette running 5.59@ 274.83mph.

In July, the black ‘Big Brother’ car, as the Moits team call it, made the journey to Australia, with the team hiring Sydney Dragway for a week of testing in the lead-up to its public debut at Po Tung’s Grudge Kings event. They also brought out the Pro Line Racing crew from the US, including Steve Petty and Eric Dillard, to help out.

The Big Brother car is a 2014 Mustang, built by Tim Mcamis Race Cars in Missouri. It packs a 540ci Pro Line/alan Johnson 481X engine with a pair of 102mm Precision turbos hanging off it. It’s backed up by a two-speed Rossler Turbo 400 transmission and peaks with 70psi of boost down its throat! The car weighs in at 2560lb.

The team ran a string of half-track passes during testing in order to tune the chassis and engine to the track and weather conditions. This resulted in Paul running a blistering 5.58@261.67mph – the quickest sedan pass in Australia’s history and also beating his own Australian speed record of 261.22mph, which he ran in the orange ‘Little Brother’ car last year. Yes, Big Brother certainly had arrived. Paul then bettered that speed by running a 5.61@266mph pass two days later.

Come race day though, Paul and crew couldn’t get the power to the ground and had a few passes with severe tyre shake, resulting in the runs being aborted. Back in the pits the crew made some changes to the chassis and got the car back on track for another pass late in the day.

The crowd was pumped to see the Moits Mustang run a fast number. It launched hard, left the line perfectly and stayed straight, but just after the finish line Paul ran into trouble as he pulled the ’chutes. The car took a sharp turn to the right, making contact with the wall at 261.57mph, then bounced back to the lefthand side of the track. Fortunately Paul wasn’t injured and still ran a 5.79 ET on that pass.

“We aren’t exactly sure why the car turned

to the right at his point but we will find out,” Paul said. “Big Brother is off-tap and runs hard. It will run even harder once we sort it out again.”

It wasn’t all bad news in the Moits Racing camp; the Little Brother orange Mustang reset the world record in the Outlaw 10.5 class during testing, with Paul pedalling it to a 5.86@255.29mph, making it the fastest and quickest car on a 10.5 tyre in the world! “I was over the moon as soon as the crew told me the numbers I just ran,” Paul enthused. The car had also run its best 60ft numbers twice before the world record-breaking run.

This Mustang runs a similar drivetrain to Big Brother, with a 540ci Pro Line/alan Johnson 481X but with a pair of 98mm Precision turbos and a three-speed Rossler Turbo 400 trans. It weighs in at 2750lb and sees boost peak at 60psi.

“I’d just like to thank all of my crew for all their hard work over the past week,” Paul said.
