Day Ten

SALVAGE JOB

Street Machine - - Driver Reviver -

ON TUESDAY, POR440’S steering woes required a trip to Purkey’s Auto Salvage, a wrecking yard filled to the brim with American metal. Originally spotted from the air by Mark and Steve in one of Dale’s planes, Purkey’s is a vast automotive graveyard, with rusted hulks filling acres of Kansas woodland.

Under the tree canopy, models of every marque were hidden. Even classics like tri-five Chevs were represented in high numbers, awaiting the day they too may be restored.

Australian street machiners would be amazed to find just one such vehicle in a wrecking yard, let alone rows of them. But that’s a testament to the size of America; even yards of this size aren’t really a big deal in the US, and you can find your dream restoration – or the pieces to complete it.

Mark was able to find a suitable steering box from a Dodge Dart, with Dale transferring the internals from this to the Valiant box. A better-steering and safer POR440 was thus on the road for the final leg to Cordova for the start of Hot
