SYDNEY DRAGWAY REFURBISHMENT

WORK has commenced in earnest on re-laying and refurbishing Sydney Dragway. “[The project] is on track at the moment; we haven’t had any rain delays,” said General Manager Peter Beaumont as we went to print. “Concrete footings have been dug, and concrete blocks are being cut into 1m squares and lifted, with the concrete being recycled. At the moment we’re looking at mid-to-late August for the resumption of racing.” Not long before construction company Fulton Hogan began to tear the strip up, the lads from Maatouks Racing sent it out with a bang, with the METRO R32 GT-R running a 6.47@219.94mph, claiming the record not only for the world’s quickest GT-R but also the world’s quickest AWD car. Furthermore, KING32 (Urban Warfare, SM, May ’20) reeled off a 6.84@209mph to become the world’s quickest and fastest street radial GT-R. Congrats, lads!

PRO.ST.1 REBUILD

EASILY one of the most iconic Australian pro street cars of all time, Phil Rillotta’s head-kicking LC Torana, PRO.ST.1, is undergoing a big revamp and will soon make a longawaited return to the scene. Photos of the car stripped to a bare shell surfaced on the Facebook page of Adelaide Custom Paint and Body, who are treating it to a fresh lick of red paint. Phil recently told SM that aside from more modern fabricated front and rear suspension systems, a Lenco, some billet bits, subtly updated interior trim, and a red engine bay, undercarriage and dash, the car will be restored to how it was when we featured it in the Oct/ Nov 1991 issue, right down to the freshened blown and injected Rodeck small-block! All going well, it’ll be at Street Machine Summernats 34, and we can’t wait to see it!

NEXT!

WE’RE already running full tilt at the September issue of Street Machine, and we’ll have something kind of novel for you – fresh event coverage! We’ll be front and centre at the Burnout Masters event at Sydney Dragway to catch all the beaut smoky action as motorsport starts to become a thing again. We’ve also got a bumper crop of feature cars lined up – everything from fast stuff to shiny stuff to street stuff – and a ripper tech yarn on fitting a 5.4L Boss motor to an earlier Falcon, making it stop and steer and ensuring the whole show is street-legal. All this and more V8-powered good times in the September issue of Street Machine, on sale 13 August!
