HOLDEN OUT

-

AN EMOTIONAL win for Shane Van Gisbergen and Garth Tander at Mount Panorama in October marked the end of Holden’s factory involvement in the Supercars series. With just one racing season left before the Lion departs circuits forever, you took to Facebook to reflect on the Aussie icon’s past, present and future.

Peter Julian – The cars driven at Bathurst are so irrelevant now to cars you can buy; it’s pretty pointless putting any brand’s badge on them at all.

Brendan Smith – The Mustang race car is based on the road-going version that you can go out and buy right now! Ya can’t go out and buy a new Commodore, can you?

Peter Julian – I have a Mustang; it’s 100 per cent identical to the track car – apart from every single part.

Paul Shags Shalagin – Gave up on this series when they went to transaxles. Go back to H-pattern boxes; that’ll sort the drivers out. Gazza Davo – You mean the badge is Holden?

Steve Cupo – What a crock. These cars are not Holdens or Fords.

Joseph Mancini – Das Holden.

Sam Jackson – Too bad it’s ugly and not Australian.

Matt Emry – Erm, most of the Commodores we had were Opel/vauxhall-originated... Greg Brewer – Rushed out this morning to buy a rear-wheel-drive V8 ZB Commodore! Mike Mitchell – The VF was the last Holden in my books. Sorry not sorry.

Simon Kretschmer – This race series with fake cars sucks so much. I went to The Bend and the Excel series was more interesting. With any luck, the series will be done for good now, so we can get back to a real sport. New series: Anything goes, but you need to make it in your own shed and drive it to work once a week.

Marty Toman – Win on Sunday, nothing to sell on Monday. Well done, Holden.

David Hosking – Some Holden-badged sheet metal crossed the line. I guess it’s closer to Aussie-made than a factory one.

Justin Lawlor – Basically no sheet metal involved anymore; they went carbon composite a while back.

Jimmy James – Losing Valiants from Bathurst still hurts more than this.

Simon Wehr – Yeah, because they were so successful with that highly competitive threespeed gearbox and well-known Chrysler reliability. How many times did they win again? Oh, that’s right – none! But in all seriousness, that six-pack with the triple Webers was a killer combo. If they had access to a fourspeed, I’m sure things would have been different.

Jason Paget – Won by a Kiwi driver. Mick Whitehorn – German-built Holden. Jodsta Stalenberg – Race car built in Melbourne.

Nick Keramidiaris – I’m a Mopar man, but I loved the rivalry between the Falcon and Commodore. Bathurst will never be the same again.

Shane Kay – It’s an Opel-shaped body with a Chev in it on a generic race chassis. What part of it is Holden?

Brad Lees – None of the panels fit on a roadgoing Mustang. At least the Opel panels fit on a ZB.

John Aubert – It represents the history of the Holden brand and the magnitude of the win in our time. May not be a real Holden car, but it was a great win.
