ROD KNOCKERS
FORD seems set to return to a classic pushrod V8, with a monstrous 6.8-litre donk all but confirmed for production at the company’s Windsor engine plant. While it’s likely to first appear under the bonnet of a truck, many are hoping for it to reach the new-gen Mustang. When news of the old-fashioned motor broke in November, you had plenty to say on Facebook.
Liam Cotterill – Pushrod again? Let’s step back 20 years in time, why don’t we?
Yibby Avel – And in another 20 years it’ll be cheap enough to throw in a Commodore.
Enoch Bailey – With bores and strokes that big, something has to be given up to reduce the overall package size. Also, you don’t need to wring the thing out to a billion rpm, so pushrods are just fine.
Yibby Avel – Well, it certainly won’t end up in a Falcon.
Chris Hopkins – Give it time and I’m sure it will.
Giovanni Dionori – But why? Granted, you can’t push the Coyote’s cubes up, but the GT500 proves you can get some pretty insane power out of it with the right poweradder.
Matty Vincent – Will be a great thing if the new 7.2 Godzilla is anything to go by.
Paul Williams – Would be a great idea so I don’t have to put an LS in my Australian Falcon. If they don’t become a common, cheap engine, then an LS is the only option.
Enoch Bailey – You could always go Barra.
Paul Williams – I know, but I just can’t handle the noise. Has to be V8, even if they aren’t as good.
Mike Allfrey – Pushrod? Why not overhead cam? Way more efficient. Pushrod is so oldtech.
Anthony Moon – Pushrod engines are smaller and lighter, so don’t have to carry so much weight. Also, the frontal area of the car can be smaller, resulting in less drag.
Daniel Duggan – If you’re looking for a larger-displacement pushrod engine, I’m pretty certain that efficiency is not really something you’re concerned about.
Arvin Paulo Villegas – Japan is developing smaller, greener and more powerful engines and Ford is still stuck in time.
Dean Starr – Ford’s 5.2 Voodoo with a 8250rpm redline, 526hp naturally aspirated – best V8 to come out of America.
Murat Harman – So with the same compression as the Godzilla, we’re looking at about 400hp from the factory. That’s 60hp less than the Coyote from an engine that’s 26 per cent larger. Yeah, no thanks; I’ll keep tuning my 5.0.
Harry Kay – Will it fit into my AU ute?
Ed Kisun – If this 6.8 Godzilla were to end up in a Mustang it would be a completely different configuration with different heads, cam, intake and tune.
Jamie Faulkner – Might make for a nice engine transplant donor in the future, especially given all those Mustang crash compilations! Josh Whalen – Coming to a crowd near you!
