OUT WITH THE OLD…

-

IN Mid-january, the Victorian Government announced a ‘cash for clunkers’ pilot program, offering to provide young and elderly drivers with grants and low-cost leases to get them into newer vehicles. Though details on the program are sparse at time of print, the concept has certainly ruffled some feathers among commenters on our socials, with many drawing links to the similar, oft-decried American scheme of 2009.

Craig Bullock – Making the roads safer in the first place might help. I would’ve thought you’d start where the problem was.

Azza Bugeja – I agree, but be careful – they’ll put in more ‘safety’ cameras. ’Cause as you can see, the road toll is almost zero since their introduction.

Lou Carpinato – Sorry buddy, but they don’t make money fixing the roads.

Brett Ladhams – So the P-plater in the bush that wants a 4WD and can only afford a 90s Hilux will now be offered help to buy a Hyundai i30.

Callum Mclachlan – To be fair, I think they’d still go with the Hilux. They know what they want. I see this as more of a scheme for the general population who see cars as appliances. They just want a car and don’t care what it is. Unfortunately, the majority of people will always see cars as appliances and nothing more.

Garry Hart – Vehicles aren’t the problem. Money would be better spent on giving new P-platers a few days’ training. One day in the passenger seat of a truck so they can realise how hard it is for truck drivers to see you and to stop a heavy vehicle. Then a day on the back of a motorcycle so they can realise how vulnerable you feel. Then they will be more aware on the road.

Benjamin Patter – What if these individuals can’t afford to pay the upkeep/maintenance of these newer cars?

Craig Purton – They still don’t realise that it’s the driver who is the problem; not the car.

George Vidovic – Many years ago the powersthat-be tried to implement legislation to not re-register vehicles that were 25 or more years old if they ran out of rego! It was stopped by powerful judges and certain individuals that owned classic vehicles that at the time were not registered. This is just another way of these wankers taking control! Don’t let them!

Wayne Lineker – They are trying to buy up all the mang-mangs and put them away in storage, like government bonds. Then when they are $100K each they will sell them off!

Craig Bailey – A push for people to own nothing and lease everything. It’s coming.

Johnny Slender – It’s the start of the push to electric cars. Welcome to your Green New Deal.

Marky Shakel – I’ve got a 60s car in the shed – when I drive that car it’s probably safer than some dickhead in a new car.

Chris Crampton – Nothing cheaper than a promise made with taxpayer dollars.

Renato Quintal – I’ve seen more young drivers kill themselves in later-model cars than in old Toyota Coronas. Brendon Brazier – The government should give P-platers huge discounts on the first car they buy with an open licence – if they don’t lose a single demerit point. Riley Cavanagh – Why do cars have to be roadworthy when the roads aren’t carworthy?
