AUSTRALIA – BEAUTIFUL ONE DAY AND PERFECT THE NEXT

January 26 is a very important date for Australia.

- LAUREN HOPE, COLUMNIST

It is a day for reflection as we acknowledge our history, celebrate our beautiful country and recognise what it means to be an Aussie.

So, what is it that we love about our country? Why is Australia Day one of the most celebrated public holidays of the year?

Well, our natural landscape doesn’t leave much to be desired with some of the world’s best beaches, expansive parklands, rainforests, dessert ranges, Uluru and don’t forget we also lay claim to Crocodile Dundee and Vegemite!

However, celebrating Australia means much more than feeling grateful about our scenery.

We are fortunate to live in a democratic country with a sense of fair go and never-say-die attitude, freedoms of choice and of course, our people.

We celebrate Australia Day in many forms (the beauty of our freedom of choice) with recent statistics indicating that three in four Australians value its true meaning.

There are numerous public events, community events, flag raising ceremonies, backyard cricket games and of course the iconic blow-up pool, barbecue and festive drink.

And we can’t forget about those terrible lamb ads which take over our TV’S.

But, it doesn’t really matter how you celebrate the occasion as each of us have our own traditions and cultures.

So, whether you “are throwing a snag on the barbie”, watching the local yabby races or simply just having a well-earned rest, please remember how lucky we are to be Australian.

It truly is beautiful one day and perfect the next.
