A PERSONAL SANCTUARY

-

It’s no secret that times are changing, and many people feel concerned or not secure in the shifting sands of our world of late.

As usual, trends change from year to year and season to season, but generally they are more a reflection on the more shallow desires of people — colour, textures, style.

This year, however, experts are predicting — and already seeing — a shift in this.

The main trend that is set to stay for the entirety of 2019 is making the home a sanctuary, a place of nature and nurture where people can feel safe and comfortable.

This means a high emphasis on round shapes and gentle curves, with minimal harsh corners.

Think bulbous lamp stands and decor balls in woven rattan bowls.

Speaking of rattan, natural fibres and neutral colours are also expected to add to the sanctuary feel of the home, with woven materials like rattan, cane and grasses used for blanket boxes, side tables and decor items.

Even woven chairs are making a comeback between the natural nature of them and the accompanying trend that sees the outdoors brought in and vice versa — think luxurious outdoor living settings coming inside for everyday use.

Interior decorating’s colours this year have an emphasis on the natural as well, with terracotta expected to only get bigger both in colour and material, as well as the same for concrete and wood.

For those of us who don’t want to turn the house upside down to completely redecorate, this year’s trend also suits well.

Adding soft furnishings and other items that speak “comfort” or “sanctuary” to you is all you need to make your house the place to be.
