Cooler weather is the ideal time to experiment with a range of stylish looks – think layers and textures. Add touches of wool, felt and leather and don’t forget accessories extend to gloves, scarfs and hats.

Before you go crazy shopping for this season’s latest trends, just check that your wardrobe has the basics.

Here is my list of top five essentials for creating a variety of stylish winter looks.

1. GOOD COAT

The length depends on your height and overall style preferences, but always try to find one that draws in at the waist, creating a great shape – even if it’s just an illusion!

2. JACKET

For those who work indoors and need a professional outer layer to wear outside or around the office, go for a quality well-cut blazer: A classic style will last for years.

Alternatively, pick a casual jacket that is light enough to keep you warm indoors but thick enough to protect you from the wind if you’re out and about.

Some great options would be leather, denim, bomber or military jacket.

3. SCARFS

You will need at least three scarfs that you can rotate.

Choose colours and patterns that complement your coat and jacket while bringing energy and youth to your face.

Avoid bulky scarfs if you are broader on top.

4. THERMAL UNDERGARMENTS

This is probably the most under rated item of clothing on the planet.

Nonetheless, if you have good quality thermals on, you can avoid looking like the ‘Michelin Man’ while you stay warm.

I always recommend these to my clients – and I get a few raised eyebrows – but trust me, those thermals from the outdoor stores really make winter much more bearable.

5. BOOTS

Leather, pleather, suede, polyester, whatever takes your fancy.

Just get some on your feet for instant style that really will put some pep in your step.

We all love to wear black during the cooler months, which is why – more often than not – I recommend a black pair of boots.

However, if you have fair hair, don’t shy away from tan or camel colours; they are just as flattering.
