WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

-

Christmas is a time for giving, good cheer, overeating and, of course, presents. But do you ever stop to think about what our generosity is doing to the planet? Here are a few simple ways you can make Christmas a special time for your loved ones and the fragile place we call home.

WHAT A WASTE

Wrapping paper continues to be one of our greatest sources of Christmas rubbish, with upwards of 7000 tonnes being thrown away each year. This has a huge impact on our forests and landfill (where foils cannot break down).

If you’re looking for an alternative that is stylish and will make a visual impact, why not put your present in a gift box that can be used again and again? There’s no problem with re-gifting if you’re helping the environment at the same time.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Research shows that Australian households (and businesses) are throwing away almost four million tonnes of food every year. Christmas is a particularly bad time for waste as we all make the traditional mistake of buying too much food – meat, fruit and other perishables – in anticipation of a grand Christmas lunch or dinner.

But do we really need it? There are only so many ham sandwiches you can eat into January and only so many pavs you can get through, so keep that front of mind when heading down the supermarket aisle.

ON THE CARDS

Twenty years ago, it would have been heresy to suggest but do we really need Christmas cards strung across a doorway to remind us of all the wonderful people in our lives? Are they necessary?

In this world of technology and connectivity, it’s so much easier to contact a loved one (even on the other side of the world) and speak face to face for free. Or send your well wishes via an email or e-card. These days there are a host of options available to let family and friends know you’re thinking of them during the festive season.

By making a few changes to your habits this Christmas, you will not only help protect our planet but hopefully prove an inspiration to others.
