VOLKSWAGEN’S NEW HERO

- BY GRANT EDWARDS

This hero doesn’t wear a cape. But the new star of Volkswagen’s range has ample super attributes.

Replacing the former Passat CC, the Arteon 206TSI R-line arrives wearing dramatic Gran Turismo lines.

Did you just scoff? The devil is in the beautiful detail. VW is aiming high with this stunning saloon.

Not all good looks are courtesy of a swoopy-roofed silhouette, frame-less glass doors and wide 19-inch wheels, it’s bursting with outstanding technology that has the Arteon knocking on the door of the Mercedes-benz C-class, BMW 3 Series and even company brethren, the Audi A4.

Only available in one specification (there are two options: a sound and style package for $2500 and the $2500 sunroof), it’s a lengthy list of standard gear. Luxuries like a power tailgate, soft Nappa leather trim, 9.2-inch infotainment system you can control with hand gestures (no, we’re not joking), automatic parking and push button start mean there is little left on the shelf.

The latest safety tech is also there, including radar cruise control.

Colour options include white, along with metallic hues silver, grey, yellow, red, blue or pearl black.

Yet it’s not all show. The 206kw engine packs a fair wallop.

Plant your foot and you’ll reach 100km/h in rapid time and with a selection of drive modes from sports to comfort to suit driver moods.

The Arteon is for those who want the best, yet aren’t afraid to snub the prestige badge.
