PARENTING – THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!

- BY LAUREN HOPE, GENERAL COLUMNIST

When you become a parent your whole life changes. Your child becomes your priority and focus – it is a completely amazing and rewarding experience.

But, let’s get real about it! It’s not all roses, rainbows and unicorns, it is probably the most challenging job in the world. The struggle is most definitely real.

I am a mum to two beautiful, healthy (well most of the time) boys aged one and five years. I live my life at 100 miles an hour while I juggle two businesses, two children, a FIFO husband and household (that’s always in a state of bedlam), all while maintaining some sort of social life.

I must admit that I seem to thrive on the intensity, yes, I am exhausted, cranky and hard to live with (apparently), but I find some of my best decisions are made under pressure. Most of the time I feel like I have the balancing act under control but throw in an episode of hand, foot and mouth disease (our most recent illness) and life soon turns to chaos!

However, I am not alone and I always find some solace when I speak to my other mummy friends and hear their struggles with broken arms, teeth getting knocked out, croup, lack of sleep and the list goes on. It’s like we are in a club and sharing our stories makes us all feel a little more human! #squadgoals

Seriously though, I was always the person who had zero aspirations to be a parent, until the birth of my first son, Slater, I had never held a baby and I was 28-years-old and an aunty to three children. To set the scene the first nappy change was an earth-shattering experience for me!

However, now I wouldn’t have it any other way. I absolutely love them with all my heart, vegemite faces and all!

I was going to end my article with an inspirational quote but that doesn’t really suit the “Hope Mantra”.

So, instead I leave you with this – ‘“before becoming a parent, I didn’t know that I could ruin someone’s life by asking them to put on pants”.
