BRIDGE BURNING AND OTHER HOBBIES

-

BY KITTY FLANAGAN

If you’ve ever seen this Australian comedian perform — whether live or on television — you’ll recognise her straight away in this book.

Flanagan writes how she speaks in her comedy segments, which makes this a hilarious read.

Not so much an autobiography as a collection of life stories, her matter-of-fact style in recounting memories had me in tears of laughter at times.

At one point, Flanagan describes her then two-year-old brother as being “still at that awkward age where any dissent is managed by the parent tucking you under one arm, turning you into a human football and marching off with you even if you’re flailing around in protest.”

It was also really interesting to get an inside look at the “rise of a stand-up comedian” and discovering that improvisation is actually quite uncommon — particularly in Flanagan’s case.

This irreverent look at life — from childhood and work to travel and relationships — is perfect for a good laugh and a great pick-me-up any time. Bridge Burning and Other Hobbies by Kitty Flanagan is available from Allen&unwin Book Publishers and local bookstores. RRP $29.99.
