A LOCAL’S GUIDE TO THE BEST OF EVERYTHING
General manager Mark Rose has made it his mission to make The Rees one of the premier accommodation options in the world. Here are his recommendations for getting the most from your Queenstown holiday:
BEST WAY TO START THE DAY
A walk along the lakeside track from the hotel into town to Joe’s Garage for the best flat white in Queenstown.
BEST DAY TRIP
A helicopter wine tour (with Mark). Fly to Rippon winery on the shores of Lake Wanaka for a tutored tasting, onto Mt Difficulty Wines for lunch and another tasting, then the Cardrona Hotel (New Zealand’s second oldest) to meet some locals, before ending the day with a glacier landing and a glass of champagne.
BEST NZ RED
Let’s go local where one of my favourites is Quartz Reef Bendigo pinot noir 2014. We are talking about an Aston Martin of the Central Otago wine world. This bold, generous pinot is estate-grown at Bendigo Estate.
BEST NZ WHITE WINE
Rippon Osteiner 2016 (Wanaka) is a wonderful, crisp, picnic wine grown biodynamically on the shores of Lake Wanaka. A variety you’re unlikely to know, but a variety that is well worth trying. Summer in a glass.
BEST LOCAL BEER
Lake & Wood Brew Co – my favourite is “A-town” on tap in Arrowtown. It’s
ONSEN HOT POOLS
an IPA, delicious, all New Zealand ingredients, brewed in 60L batches, handmade by Jay (Sherwood), the only beer brewed in Queenstown.
BEST DISH AT TRUE SOUTH DINING ROOM
So many to choose from but Havoc pigs cheek croquette, cauliflower crème caramel, sweet and sour apricot covers all the bases as the ingredients are all local and Havoc Farm Pork is an organic pig farm – you can really taste the difference.
BEST PACKING TIP
Bring layers – the weather is changeable.
BEST TRAVEL HACK
Queenstown is busy year round – book well ahead or try looking at the shoulder season deals for cheaper flights and hotels.
BEST PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
For amazing photographs looking back to Queenstown, take a Helicopter Line helicopter to Cecil
A great way to end the day in winter, immersed in nature with great views overlooking the Shotover Canyon.
