THE NEW AUSSIE ROAD TRIP

Sunday Herald Sun - Escape - - WELCOME KANGAROO ISLAND, SOUTH AUSTRALIA -

Australia is one hell of a country. It is blessed with epic and ever-changing scenery, from turquoise waters and pockets of tropical paradise to red sands and stunning gorges. It’s time to hit the road and see it all, be it on a big lap from state to state or a few days away by a quiet river somewhere.

There’s nothing like the open road and pitching a tent or setting up a caravan to make you feel completely free: it’s the reset button we all need to hit. Best of all, it’s cheap to do.

If you think caravanning is reserved for older generations, think again: there are more caravanners and campers in the 30-54 age bracket than any other. Social media sites are littered with breathtaking images from young families crisscrossing the country, whose children spend their days exploring crystal-clear creeks and being home schooled.

Caravan parks ain’t what they used to be either. They offer myriad accommodation options, from unpowered tent sites to luxury villas, and boast waterparks, jumping pillows and loads of other activities to keep the kids amused (with not an electronic device in sight). The one thing that hasn’t changed is the opportunity they present to spend time with family, deepen bonds and create memories.

Which brings me to Escape’s special edition magazine which is on sale now in supermarkets and newsagents. It’s devoted to the new Australian road trip and in it we’ve selected some of the best places to visit and set up camp, and filled the pages with inspiration, tips, tricks and advice to help you get out there, leave the day-to-day behind, and have lifechanging adventures.
