SECRETS OF A MODEL PACKER

Sunday Herald Sun - Escape - - HOW I PACK -

Splitting her time between her native Australia and her home in Los Angeles, model Ashley Hart is no stranger to travel. Whether she’s hopping across the world from one glamorous photoshoot to the next, leading a yoga retreat by a sun-soaked beach, or filming for her latest project – she’s a presenter for Helloworld’s new travel show – the jetsetter knows that preparation leads to packing perfection.

MY PACKING STYLE IS …

Well thought out. I write down what I’ll be doing on each of my days and pack based on that. I work out the number of pairs of underwear I’ll need, vitamins and so on. I take a minimal number of shoes and accessories. I used to overpack, but after lugging so much stuff around airports, I’ve learned to be minimal.

I PACK FOR A TRIP BY …

Trying to fit everything into a carryon. I pride myself on it! I look at the weather forecast and plan accordingly.

ESSENTIALS FOR A WORK TRIP …

Normally they’re pretty basic as there will be stylists and a hair and make-up team. I always bring beige underwear, sunscreen for under my make-up and my favourite snack bars.

Shooting the Helloworld travel show was a little different. I worked with the stylist in advance, so my wardrobe was limited to recycled fashion or sustainable brands, which meant I wore a lot of my own stuff. So I had to plan different outfit changes based on each episode, bringing more outfits with me than usual. I also did my own hair and make up, so I needed to bring a hair iron and make-up.

MY OUTFIT WHEN I TRAVEL …

Smart, loose-fitting clothes. I always wear a hat to cover crazy plane hair. On long flights, I’ll change into my PJs, but generally I stay in my outfit. I like looking nice when I travel.

MY LUGGAGE IS …

Antler. It has been my go-to luggage for years. I love the four-wheel, zipper suitcases – I have carry-on and checkin bags in gold to match.

MY TOP CARRY-ON TIP IS …

To decant liquids into travel-sized bottles – this was a game-changer for me. Also, wearing my heaviest jackets and shoes to save on luggage weight.

I NEVER BOARD WITHOUT …

A good book, prepared healthy food and snacks so I don’t have to eat the plane food, my refillable water bottle and Swisse hydrating face mask.

I USED TO PACK …

Tracksuits, but then I realised that I looked like a bum travelling in them! Plus, they take up too much space.

WASH BAG STAPLES INCLUDE …

Electric toothbrush – it’s a little heavier, butI can’t live without it – Luma’s lip and cheek pod; Swisse rose hip oil – hydrating and healing – and their BB cream, which feels great and also protects my skin from the sun. Lastly, Olaplex hair treatment. I often find with travel my hair gets extra dry.

MY TOP PACKING HACK …

Theme your outfits, so shoes and handbags always match.

MY GO-TO TRAVEL APP IS …

Happycow. It’s great for looking up good healthy food spots.

I MAKE A HOTEL ROOM FEEL LIKE HOME BY …

Draping a sarong over the end of the bed. I always travel with one and I think it makes the room look a lot more homely. Also, I always pack a sage stick to cleanse the hotel room.

MY PACKING RESOLUTION IS …

I guess I could lose the books and use a Kindle instead, but I do love an actual book. Other than that, I’ve got it pretty down pat. AS TOLD TO PAUL EWART
