Sunday Herald Sun - Escape - - WISHLIST CRUISING -

Danube has been a staple on river cruises for decades, but the small yet perfectly formed town of Durnstein, Austria, hasn’t made it onto the itineraries of most Danube River cruises until very recently.

Located about an hour outside Vienna in the renowned wineproducing region of Wachau Valley, its prime location along the Danube makes it an ideal river cruise port.

Surrounded by vineyard-covered hills, shore excursions offer winery visits to sample award-winning rieslings, as well as postcard-perfect villages, and historic sights – such as the castle where King Richard I was once imprisoned.
