AVOID PLASTIC BOTTLES

Sunday Herald Sun - Escape - - ESCAPE | YOUR VIEW -

After travelling to Asia and witnessing the amount of plastic waste produced (particularly around the once pristine rivers of the Himalayas in India), and much of it single-use water bottles, my wife and I decided to be more environmentally friendly on a trip.

Take your stainless-steel water bottles from home and buy a packet of water purification tablets from a camping shop. Buy a 1-litre bottle of water at your destination and once used, fill it from the tap, add a single purification tablet and in 30 minutes you have safe drinking water.

We would have avoided disposing of dozens of plastic bottles on a recent trip to Bhutan via Thailand. Just keep in mind that you can’t transit through airport customs/immigration with your own water bottle with water in it. NEIL AND JOSEY MCCARTHY

CARABINER CREW

Carabiners aren’t just for mountain climbers. Have a couple in an outside pocket of your hand luggage. They can be used to attach things like a hat, neck pillow, thongs, even the little bag that has the snacks you just bought. Much easier than juggling these items. HOLLY HUMPHREY

DUBAI BY BUS

We recently visited Dubai after a trip through Spain and the Greek Islands. We had three to four days to look around so we pre-booked a one-day tour of Abu Dhabi which left a few days for Dubai.

We booked a discounted three-day pass on the local Big Bus for $90 through the Viator booking app. This proved to be extremely good value as the one ticket included a number of extra benefits over and above the hopon-hop-off bus tours around Dubai.

I recommend it to all visitors to the Emirates. JOHN BEEVERS

PAY IT FORWARD

Buying a pre-read $2 book at the local op shop is better value than purchasing at the airport. When finished, pass it on to another traveller. PAM CORLISS

SNAP LUGGAGE

We have just had a lengthy holiday in Europe and my tip is to photograph each piece of your luggage, including backpacks when you begin your travels. This was useful to show to airport and tour staff when we had items misplaced or delayed. The results were 100 per cent and they appreciated having a visual of our bags. DEB STANES

EXPLORE WITH HANOIKIDS

If ever in Hanoi Vietnam, check out the student-run voluntary organisation which runs free tours called Hanoikids.org! What a lovely group of young adults. An experience never forgotten as they enthusiastically showed us their country and wanted to learn about Australia. KARLI CAPPELLO

COMPETITION WINNER

Congratulations to Linda Monmouth, October’s prize winner, for her tip on taking electrolytes prior to long-haul travel. She has won an Osprey wheeled duffel bag worth $320.

PIC OF THE WEEK

PICTURE: PAUL HOSKINS

Visiting the Swiss Alps in June, we were amazed to see skiers on the snow-covered peak of the Breithorn, near Zermatt.
