TRAVEL MUG’S THE SHOT

Sunday Herald Sun - Escape - - LINER NOTES -

When cruising, take a travel mug – that way you can make a cuppa at the free station and take it back to your room. My hubby did this on our last cruise and after the first stop all the men he’d met returned with one. They thought it was a great idea. MICHELLE SMITH

RESORT TO CAR HIRE

Hire a car through the resort/hotel you are staying at for a much better rate than what you would get otherwise. Really easy and convenient too, as you can collect and drop off the car to your resort carpark outside business hours and just hand in the keys at reception. TANYA DUDA

COPY THAT, TRAVELLERS

Take a two-way walkie talkie on your travels. Give one to a fellow traveller and stay in touch as you wander off to explore. Good for hikers, walkers and inquisitive travellers who wander the markets. No need for a phone or Wi-Fi and you can always stay in touch. Safe and sound: walk and talk. GENE BENNETT

KISS AND TRAVEL

Go on a date! Most people (hopefully single ones) have dating apps so, when travelling, get out and meet people. Obviously take the precaution of meeting somewhere public, potentially during the day, let a friend know where you are, don’t share personal information and have a chat with them before you meet.

But, fundamentally, we’re all just humans trying to get along. I met up with a person from a dating app and it was great to get someone’s perspective of a country you’d only otherwise see as an outsider. FYI things are still going well two months later … JESS BOUYAMOURN

GEARED FOR THE BEST RESULT

After completing several driving holidays in the US and Europe our tip is to arrive the day before you are picking up your hire car and contact the hire company to check if they have the car you paid for in Australia. This eliminates the likelihood of your car not being available on the day you want to leave. Also, if you’ve booked a one-way hire, check if there are any cars needing to be returned to your final destination, as they may refund the one-way hire fee. Plus, the car may be an upgrade. Congratulations to Karli Cappello for her tip on Hanoikids (November 18).

“If ever in Hanoi Vietnam check out the student-run voluntary organisation which runs free tours called Hanoikids.org.

“We did and what a lovely group of young adults.

“An experience never forgotten as they enthusiastically showed us their country and wanted to learn about Australia!”

Karli has won an essentials pack from BlackWolf, Eagle Creek and Vigilante worth $465.
