Sunday Herald Sun - Escape - - LINER NOTES - ANDREA BLACK

Love music? Fashion? Gardening? Head to the high seas. Welcome to the rise of themed cruises. These days there’s a cruise for whatever you might love. Take Elvis for example. This year fans of the king of rock ’n’ roll sailed on the inaugural three-night Elvis tribute cruise.

At the recent World’s Leading Cruise Line Summit, P&O Cruises president Sture Myrmell said the Tribute to the King sailing has been so successful that Elvis fans will sail on a larger ship in 2019, this time the 2000-guest Pacific Explorer. They can expect to see tribute artists perform, sing karaoke and sample Elvis’s favourite dishes including southern fried chicken (Love Me Tenders?) and a peanut butter and banana sundae.

Whatever your passion, here are some cruises that might appeal.

FASHIONS ON THE DECK

Forget Fashions on the Field – on Carnival Cruise Line’s 2019 Melbourne Cup Cruise onboard Carnival Spirit, you can view some of the best fashions on deck on a cruise sailing from Sydney to Melbourne.

Media personality Deborah Hutton will host Fashions on the Spirit, a show featuring established Aussie designers. Best of all, cruisers can get involved. Bring your best frocks and fascinators as Deborah will also step into the judging panel for the guest fashion parade.

If you want tips in the fashion stakes, personal stylist and co-founder of luxe gifting brand My Style Box, Naomi Bell, will host a style workshop for cruisers to perfect outfits while milliner Serena Lindeman will run a fascinator workshop.

Carnival Spirit departs Sydney on November 3, 2019, for a six-night cruise to Melbourne. The fare includes general admission to the Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day at Flemington, plus transfers. CARNIVAL.COM.AU

CHERRY BLOSSOM SEASON

It’s a dream for many garden lovers to catch Japan’s famed cherry blossoms bloom from late March to early April and the easy way to do it is by ship with experts. Guests can experience the glorious blooms on land and onboard, and gain insight into horticulture and Japan’s history at lectures hosted by botanical guide and celebrity gardener Simon Rickard. Expect to tour some of Japan’s finest gardens, plus castles and temples. BOTANICA.TRAVEL/
