Whale sharks can grow up to 12 metres long, and weigh 11 tonnes – but they’re gentle creatures, so you can swim right beside them. Each year between May and August, they congregate at Ningaloo Reef, off Exmouth on Western Australia’s west coast – one of the only places on Earth they appear regularly – and they’re easy to observe.
